Groundbreaking News: Erthos Officially Breaks Ground on Project Bravo in Texas

Last week marked a pivotal milestone for utility-scale solar innovation. Members of the Erthos leadership team, project partners, and local stakeholders gathered in Matagorda County, Texas, to officially break ground on Project Bravo, our flagship Earth Mount Solar facility.

What Is Project Bravo—and Why Does It Change the Game

Project Bravo is a construction-stage utility asset designed to supply 124 GWh of clean energy annually under a 20-year Private Use Network (PUN) power purchase agreement with Equistar Chemicals, LP (a LyondellBasell company). Interconnecting at the Conoco 138 kV substation, the plant feeds power directly to the adjacent 2,100-acre Matagorda polymers complex.

Beyond its impressive energy volume, Project Bravo serves as a commercial showcase for the economic and operational benefits of Erthos’s Earth Mount Solar architecture:

Strategic Geography: Why Matagorda County?

Selecting Matagorda County was a deliberate choice that highlights the distinct engineering and financial advantages of Earth Mount Solar technology. Sitting on the naturally level Gulf coastal plain roughly 80 miles southwest of Houston, the site’s flat prairie terrain drastically simplifies ground preparation. By removing the need for heavy cut-and-fill grading or precise pile alignment required by standard single-axis trackers, we streamline the construction schedule from day one.

The geography also places the project directly adjacent to its primary energy consumer, the LyondellBasell Matagorda Complex. Interconnecting directly at the Conoco 138 kV substation allows Project Bravo to operate as an efficient Private Use Network, delivering clean power behind the meter without the added costs and environmental footprint of long transmission lines.

Additionally, the regional geology consists of heavy, alluvial clay soils that undergo significant expansion and contraction during dry and wet cycles. Traditional solar design relies on deep steel piles driven into the ground, which face structural stress from soil movement over time. Earth Mount Solar sidesteps this issue entirely by sitting broadly on the ground surface, distributing weight evenly across the soil footprint.

Matagorda County’s natural characteristics make it particularly well-suited to Earth Mount Solar technology. Built for Coastal Resilience

Operating on the Texas coastal plain brings severe weather demands, including high humidity, salt air, annual rainfall exceeding 44 inches, and the risk of Gulf hurricanes. Project Bravo turns these climate threats into non-issues through its static, earth-mounted design.

Because modules sit flat on the ground without racking or torque tubes, CPP wind-tunnel testing proved the array remains completely motionless in gusts up to 215 mph, yielding a certified 194 mph wind rating that eliminates tracker failure modes like torsional galloping. 

To withstand severe hail without relying on stowing mechanisms, the plant uses heavy 4.0 mm front glass, 2.0 mm back glass, double the industry standard thickness, engineered to absorb impacts from 5-inch hail.

Water management and maintenance are equally integrated into the site’s footprint. Stormwater drains through engineered frame weep holes directly into native soils, while the DC collection system uses TE SOLARLOK 2.0 IP68-rated connectors certified for over 1,300 hours of continuous submersion. Nightly maintenance is handled by 18 autonomous ErthBot™ cleaning robots, keeping soiling losses under 1% year-round in both wet and dry conditions.

A De-Risked Infrastructure Asset 

With ground broken and Erthos serving as EPC, Project Bravo enters active construction with every critical-path development milestone executed and fully assignable. The turnkey asset is anchored by a 20-year PPA with an investment-grade counterparty backed by a LyondellBasell parent guarantee. Grid connection and long-term land rights are fully secured via an executed ERCOT SGIA with AEP Texas ($7M security posted) and gen-tie easements extending past 2045.

Financial returns are bolstered by a safe-harbored 40% Investment Tax Credit, which includes Matagorda County’s 10% Energy Community adder. Independent diligence corroborates all core performance metrics, with Partner Engineering & Science validating a 122.9 GWh P50 yield and DNV verifying system technology and structural compliance. Erthos Energy Services completes the package with a 20-year fixed-price O&M wrap backed by a 100% performance guarantee.
